The crew of the Liberator

The crew of the Liberator

Transcript
There were seven of us, all Canadians, all sergeants, all right, which was a benefit, a real benefit and then we picked up a Scotsman as our second navigator. We carried two navigators because we were doing sixteen and a half and seventeen hour sorties, you see. And then they gave me an engineer who was a fellow from South Africa and this guy joined the RAF the year before I was born and I was his captain, you know, so that was a good training school and then I had a Welsh lad who... In our crew I had, there was two pilots, two navigators, four WAG's who, wireless air gunner up types, and a WEM and this WEM was a wireless electrical mechanic. Now he did all of the tasks that a WAG did plus he had some cape-, training and capability to repair equipments in flight. And that made up our crew and the only crew member I ever changed was co-pilots, because when they got a little bit of experience and showed they had what was, what we felt was necessary, they'd go back and get their own crew. On the convoy escort business we didn't have any aircraft that could provide air cover other than off a carrier to close the gap in the North Atlantic, so the Liberator was introduced, I think, into the service and design, through design to be a daylight bomber.
Description

Mr. Moore talks about the Liberator and the crew assignments for her. He also talks about why the Liberator was used in addition to the other well-known RAF aircraft (Halifax's, Sunderlands, Lancasters).

Ken Moore

Born in Rock Haven, Saskatchewan, Ken Moore was the youngest of eight children. His father died when he was very young and his mother raised the family on her own. After graduating from highschool, he hitchhiked to Vancouver, BC and joined the Air Force. During the war, he piloted 61 missions, in Liberators, on coastal escort duties and submarine patrols. During one such mission, his crew sank two U-boats in 22 minutes. Because of this act he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Silver Star (by the US).
