THE SEIGNEURY OF L’ORIGINAL
This area, the present township of Longueuil, was granted
in 1674 to François Prévost, Town Major of Quebec, and was
the first seigneury in what is now Ontario. Known originally
as the seigneury of "Pointe à L’Orignac," it was not developed
until the Hon. Joseph Le Moyne de Longueuil, seigneur since
1778, granted portions to settlers during 1784-90. Nathaniel
Hazard Treadwell purchased the seigneury in 1796, built
mills and roads and expanded settlements. A United States
citizen, Treadwell left Canada during the War of 1812 and
forfeited his lands, but later regained these and sold the
seigneury to his son Charles in 1824. By 1873 most of the
seigneurial lands had passed out of the family.

Erected as a lasting tribute to honour the memory of those from L’Orignal and Longueuil who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and Korean War. This memorial was erected by the Township of Longueuil and the Village of L’Orignal as a Centennial Project.

The cannon is a field gun (used for direct-fire artillery support fairly close to the front), with a 7.7 cm diameter barrel. The type is the FK 96 n.a. (neuer art, for "new model"), Germany's first quick firing cannon. The cannon ID is found on the back of the breech, just above the large circular hole for inserting the shell. It is written "Nr. 5255".

Gun 5255 was captured by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion on September 27, 1918, Near the Arras-Cambrai road, North of Bourlon Wood.

Note - closed to the public since 2009.

The cairn was completed in 1840 by the Glengarry Miltia and dedicated to Sir John Colborne with a "Royal Highland banquet and whisky galore."

Source: Bowering's Guide to Eastern Ontario Excerpts from The Ottawa Citizen, August 26, 2002: Battle brews over historic cairn by Kelly Egan.

In 1997, a crew working for Parks Canada was digging around the base of the Glengarry Cairn, one of the oldest, most unusual stone monuments in Ontario. A national historic site since 1921, the cone-shaped arrangement of rock - hand stacked till it rose almost 16 metres (52 feet) - sat on an island in this broad section of the St. Lawrence River, a tribute to pioneer soldiering.

The crew made an astonishing discovery: human bones. The archaeologists dug some more, uncovering what appeared to be a burial ground, possibly as old as 2,500 years. Parks Canada notified the Mohawks of nearby Akwesasne, who owned the tiny island before it was expropriated in 1925. Talks ensued. The natives wanted the island back and the cairn, built in 1841-42, moved on the mainland.

Over time, the island and the monument, which has a crude staircase winding to the top, became a regular stopping ground for boaters. Picnic tables were set up, as was a dock, a barbecue area and an out-house. Periodically, major repairs were undertaken to stop the cairn from crumbling. (Today, a major crack has developed.)

The federal agency, meanwhile, would like to establish a mainland location where the cairn can be properly viewed on the island and where road traffic could stop and learn about the unusual memorial and its long history. The cairn is such a historical pillar in the area that it is part of the new coat of arms for the Township of South Glengarry, formed in 1998 as part of a county-wide municipal amalgamation.

CLAUDE J.P. NUNNEY. V.C.
1892 - 1918

Born in Ireland, Nunney was brought up in Lancaster
Township, Glengarry. He enlisted in the 38th Battalion,
C.E.F., in 1915 and in 1916 was sent to France where he won
the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal. On
September 1, 1918, his unit was heavily counter-attacked near
Vis-en-Artois. On his own initiative Private Nunney went
through the German barrage to the forward posts, where, by
his fearless example, he encouraged his companions to
repulse the enemy. During the Canadian attack on the
following day, he was continually in the forefront, and
"displayed throughout the highest degree of valour". Severely
wounded, he died on September 18, and was awarded the
Victoria Cross posthumously.

Erected by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board.

This memorial is dedicated to Claude J.P. Nunney, V.C. It was erected in 1962 by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board.

Claude Joseph Patrick Nunney was born in Dublin, Ireland on 24 December 1892, and came to Canada an orphan. He was initially placed in an orphanage in Ottawa, Ontario, and later with a family in nearby Glengarry County. In March 1915 at Alexandria, Ontario, Nunney enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and served with the 38th Infantry Battalion. Before winning the Victoria Cross, he had already received the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal.

Private Nunney was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for the dash and steadfast example he demonstrated on 1 and 2 September 1918 during the fighting at the Drocourt-Quéant Line in France. On 1 September, near Vis-en-Artois, positions recently captured by the Canadians were subjected to a heavy enemy artillery barrage and a counterattack. On his own initiative, Nunney left his company’s main line and went forward through the barrage to its outpost line. Here he went from position to position encouraging his comrades. The next day, Private Nunney’s exemplary conduct helped to inspire his company to carry its objective. Severely wounded on that day, Nunney died on 18 September 1918.
